Located
on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains in South western Uganda,
Mgahinga is one of the only two parks in Uganda where you
can do Gorilla tracking Safaris.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the only two parks
in Uganda that offer habitat for the endagered Mountain gorilla.It
is situated in south western Uganda and is part of the great
Virunga Conservation area, covering 434 km. Mgahinga experiences
two wet rainy seasons; February-May and September-December
of each year.
The
park experiences Afromontane vegetation and a cool climate.
The abundant type of vegetation is bamboo, a delicacy to the
mountain gorillas. Other types of flaura include the Lobelia,Haegenia
spp etc..
See: Gorillas, buffalo, elephant, bushbucks, the threatened
golden monkeys and many others.
Bird species include Rwenzori turaco, Fiscal shrine, crowned
hornbill, Black kite, Augur buzzards, and crowned crane.
Mgahinga National Park also offers three extinct volcanoes
for physically fit hikers. These are Mt. Sabyinyo (3669m),
Mt Gahinga(3474m), Mt Muhavura(4127m).
You may also visit the 342m long and 14m deep cave where the
crafty Batwas(warriors) once lived.
