Uganda Currency and Exchange
rates
The unit of currency in Uganda is the shilling.
All major currencies are accepted though the US dollar is
more widely accepted. Cash or travelers cheques can be changed
to shillings at the banks and forex bureaus in Kampala .There
is limited foreign exchange transactions outside Kampala,so
try and change your money before leaving for your safari.
Avoid carrying dollar notes issued before 2000
since banks and forex bureaus will not accept them. Small
denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 20 are exchanged at a very low
rate. Credit cards are accepted by just a few major hotels
and firms. However you can draw cash from ATMs and Barclays
Bank Kampala
Additional tips Uganda operates a liberal
banking and foreign exchange policy with no restrictions on
the amount of cash which can be brought into or taken out
of the country. There is a wide array of banks and forex bureaus
to choose from with several international banks represented
